Frequently Asked Questions
Is fine bone china suitable for everyday use?
Being light, thin and attractively translucent, fine bone china dinnerware brings a natural scent of elegance and sophistication to your dining experience, everyday is made a special day.
Fine bone china is also the strongest and most resilient material among all types of ceramics, which was the initial objective of its development. Dinnerware made from fine bone china are less likely to chip and more scratch resistant against the use of knife and fork, and other usual knocks and slips in everyday use, therefore it's easier to maintain the intact look over years and decades of service.
What is the material of the gold finishings? Is it safe?
We use Heraeus bright gold for the decorations, which is 22-carat gold dissolved in a resin and oil system, during firing, the organic components (resins and oils) burn off, and only a shiny and smooth layer of gold is left on the ware, which is durable and perfectly safe.
The gold decorations withstand dishwashing, mechanical abrasion as well as the chemical impact of detergents. However, they are not suitable for microwave use also due to the nature of being real gold.
What is bone china, and what determines the quality of the material?
Bone china is a delicate composition of kaolin clay, china stone and natural bone powder, and the quality of the material is determined by the fineness of the combination and the content of the bone powder, high quality fine bone china contains at least 30% bone powder, whereas this value of the material we use is 45%, in order to provide top-class clearness, strength, durability and silky translucency of the finished product.
Are the dinner sets dishwasher safe? What is underglaze and overglaze?
There is a quite common yet inaccurate impression that fine bone china wares are not dishwasher safe, however, this question is actually related to the concept of underglaze and overglaze, which are the two ways of applying colours and patterns to a ware, instead of the material itself.
There are three firings and two glazings in the making of a fine bone china ware, underglaze is applied after the first firing, before any glazing, which means it will naturally become part of the material, the colours and patterns never fade away and couldn't be washed off in any ways. On the other hand, overglaze is usually used if the design features printed decorative patterns, which is applied before the final firing along with the clear top glaze, has a small chance of being damaged in the dishwasher over time if they are not crafted expertly enough.
All dinnerware on our site are in the case of underglaze, and are perfectly dishwasher safe.
